We’ve launched our first 100% HVO-fuelled depot

HVO-fuel-1.jpg.jpg

We’re pleased to announce a significant milestone in our sustainability journey: we have successfully reduced our overall group fleet’s CO2 emissions by 19% through the use of HVO fuel (Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil).

Our Coventry depot now exclusively stocks HVO fuel as opposed to regular diesel. This fuel, sourced from accredited suppliers and meeting International Sustainability and Carbon Certification (ISCC) and Renewable Fuels Assurance Scheme (RFAS) standards, means that all vehicles fuelling here run on cleaner, more sustainable energy.

By making this bold move, Coventry becomes the first of our depots to lead the way in reducing our carbon footprint while supporting our clients’ Net Zero and Scope 3 objectives.

We’ve implemented this change over several months, working closely with various suppliers and partners, and we are now proud to share that every vehicle fueled at this depot uses HVO, although they may refuel with other fuels at different locations.

Operationally, our trucks can run on a blend of both diesel and HVO, making the move both practical and efficient for our operations. With 33% of our fuelling stations now using HVO, we remain committed to increasing our reliance on sustainable fuels as part of our long-term environmental strategy.

What is HVO Fuel?
HVO is an advanced, renewable diesel fuel that is produced from waste fats and oils. Unlike traditional diesel, HVO offers a cleaner alternative that significantly reduces greenhouse gas emissions. It’s a drop-in replacement for fossil diesel, meaning no modifications are needed for existing engines – a simple and effective way to transition to greener energy sources.

What are the benefits of HVO fuel?
The environmental impact of switching to HVO is profound. By adopting this fuel throughout our Coventry depot, we’re reducing our overall group fleet’s CO2 emissions by an incredible 19%.

This change advances our own sustainability goals while also enabling us to support our clients in their efforts to reduce emissions. By incorporating HVO into our operations, we help enhance our clients’ sustainability profiles and contribute to their broader environmental objectives as an essential partner in their supply chain.

Other benefits of HVO include:

  • Made from sustainable sources, HVO is 100% renewable and a pure hydrocarbon fuel.
  • Biodegradable, non-toxic, and odour-free, HVO is an environmentally friendly option.
  • Existing diesel engines can use HVO without needing any modifications.
  • By reducing greenhouse gas emissions by up to 85-90%, HVO also lowers nitrogen oxides (NOx) and particulate matter (PM).
  • HVO supports our clients and customers in achieving their Net Zero goals.

Collaborating with clients to achieve sustainability goals
When discussing what drove this transition, Managing Director Dan Fagan commented, “We understand that achieving Net Zero isn’t something any business can do alone. Reaching these ambitious targets requires collective effort across the entire supply chain. It’s about everyone – suppliers, partners, and clients – coming together to make meaningful progress.”

He added, “By transitioning ourthe Coventry depot to HVO fuel, not only are we achieving our own objectives, but we are also actively helping our clients achieve theirs. It’s been very well received by many of our customers, and it’s rewarding to know we’re contributing to their success.”

“Those within the logistics industry will understand the unique set of challenges we face when it comes to sustainability. It’s a sector that’s heavily reliant on fuel, and balancing operational efficiency with reducing environmental impact is no easy task. Nevertheless, the transition to HVO has been seamless. Our trucks can run on a blend of diesel and HVO, or solely 100% HVO, without any impact on performance or efficiency. From a fiscal and environmental perspective, the decision just made sense.”

What’s next for sustainability at Fagan & Whalley?
While this marks the beginning of our sustainability journey, it is by no means the end.

As we continue to invest in alternative fuels and sustainable technology, our goal is clear: to lead by example, meet the demands of our clients, and work collaboratively toward a greener, more sustainable future for all.

Beyond HVO, we’re also installing new fuel tanks, preparing for electric vehicle chargers, launching our first EV truck, integrating a rainwater wash system, and exploring solar panel installation. These initiatives will pave the way for even more substantial sustainability measures in the future. For now – keep your eyes peeled!
