The Blackpool Net Zero Business Academy are helping local companies understand the terms Scope 1, 2 and 3 emissions, which is becoming an increasingly common phrase in conversations around sustainability for businesses.
Through breaking down the technical terminology, the Academy are helping businesses understand their emissions and take practical steps to reduce them, improving efficiency, cutting costs, and future-proofing operations.
Josh Keen, sustainability specialist at the Academy said: “Carbon emissions are divided into three main categories.
"Scope 1 which covers direct emissions from sources a business owns or controls.
"Scope 2 includes indirect emissions from purchased energy, including electricity, heating and cooling. And Scope 3 goes further, covering all other indirect emissions across the value chain, from purchased goods and business travel to waste disposal and the use of sold products.”
For most organisations understanding Scope 3 is particularly important. The Academy highlights that this is often the largest portion of a business’ carbon footprint, and where the biggest opportunity for change lies.
The Academy’s Sustainability Specialists work directly with business leaders providing expert guidance on measuring emissions accurately, identifying hotspots, and turning data into practical action.
Local businesses are already seeing the benefits of taking practical steps with the Academy’s support. Tyson Construction electrified some of their fleet, cutting emissions from transport, thereby cutting Scope 3 emissions.
Notarianni have started to explore solar panel installations to reduce energy use and cut down Scope 1 and 2 emissions.
Whilst MC Repairs has implemented LED lighting with motion sensors, transitioned to a fully electric fleet, and installed a Solar PV system, therefore helping to reduce Scope 1 and 2 emissions.
The Academy offers fully funded support to help Blackpool based businesses make meaningful progress towards net zero. The support includes energy audits, tailored advice and personalised decarbonisation action plans. This hands-on guidance ensures business leaders can make informed decisions, tackle high-impact areas first, and measure progress.
Josh said: “This isn’t just about compliance or ticking boxes.
“It’s about creating a sustainable, resilient, and future-ready business. By understanding Scope 1, 2, and 3 emissions and acting strategically, businesses can cut costs, improve efficiency, and strengthen relationships with customers, suppliers, and stakeholders who value sustainability.”
