What’s the best way to set up a video wall display?

The first things to consider after deciding that you need a video wall display is what the specific project requirements are, along with the size of video wall you need.

Size, configuration and mounting of video wall

Remember that space limitations and the mounting options available for the area, may affect the size of video wall. However, UVS has many different solutions available to meet specific requirements, including wall mounting (if the wall is strong enough to take the weight), floor to ceiling pole mounting, and video wall free-standing structure mounting. UVS has also provided many curved video wall installations to create a more dynamic effect.

Also, it is important to consider things such as the type of content which will be displayed, as this may affect the size and shape of video wall you require. This will vary for video walls which are used in control room environments, compared to video walls for corporate or high impact advertising applications.

A 2×2, 3×3, 4×4, 5×5 or any setup that has an equal number of rows and columns of monitor screens give a similar user experience to a single TV screen, so we would suggest using these when you intend regularly displaying large single images across the whole video wall, for high impact presentations, keeping the original aspect ratio of the content.

When the number of columns and rows of screens differ, either vertically or horizontally, you can create something which has real impact with a large surface area. As in the 4×2 example above and 6×3 example below, large rectangular shaped video walls can still provide a high impact display for single large images – using the features that a video wall controller provides, where single images can be displayed across multiple screens.

Decide on a clear design in advance which you feel will provide the required visual experience for your application and high levels of satisfaction for your control room operators, customers, visitors or audience.

Video Wall Controller configuration

Once you have decided on the a design and the visual layouts required, this will determine if you need a buy a video wall controller as part of the system configuration. If you only require a single source image to be displayed across a 2×2 or 3×3 video wall, this can be achieved using the video wall screens internal processing.

If you require to be able to select multiple display formats, with single images across multiple screens and multiple images in single screens (like the layout examples below), then a video wall controller configured for your overall requirements will be required to drive the video wall screens.

Selection of a correctly configured video wall controller and suitable control software is critical. Does it have all the functions you need, can it deal with the required correct input and output signal types, and will it be capable able to manage handle the video wall size you have selected?

Video walls are built for long term use and requirements can change, so choose a controller that will serve your needs in the long-term and is ‘future proofed’ with some expansion capabilities.

The right video wall controller will give you a real-time display of perfect quality video signals and other relevant data sources.

Here are some other things to consider:

Does the controller display real time video? What kind of operator management tools does it offer? What is the distance between input sources and the controller? What is the distance between the video wall controller and the displays? What are the number, signal type and resolution of the input signals? Does the controller have to control a single video wall or multiple video walls?

UVS provides video wall solutions for a wide range of customers around the world and our Lucidity video wall controller offers bespoke functions that can enhance any project, now matter how complicated your requirements are. Get in touch now to discuss your interests and requirements.
