The Grinch who stole Christmas: Real Cyber attacks that ruined the holidays

Untitled design (1).jpg.jpg

Christmas is supposed to be a time for celebrations, not cyber chaos. But for many businesses across Lancashire and Greater Manchester, the festive season has become a prime opportunity for hackers.

Big names like Co-op and M&S aren’t the only targets, the reality is that small businesses are just as at risk, even if their stories never make the news.

Ransomware on the Rise During the Holidays
Globally, December 2024 saw a record number of ransomware attacks, 574 in total. Hackers know businesses are more vulnerable during the holiday period: offices are quieter, staff are away and monitoring is often reduced.

An anonymised example: a small e-commerce retailer in Lancashire had their systems locked over the Christmas period. With the team away, they faced days of downtime missing out on crucial holiday sales.

Lesson: Ensure your backups are encrypted, tested and easily accessible, especially over the festive break.

Scams Targeting Finance Teams
Holiday-season scams often impersonate senior staff or suppliers. One anonymised Lancashire SME received a fake invoice just before Christmas. With the accounts team short-staffed, a payment was nearly made to a fraudster.

Lesson: Introduce strict approval processes, especially for year-end payments. Multi-person checks are essential during festive periods.

DDoS Attacks and Website Outages
Large retailers like M&S have experienced outages during peak shopping periods. Smaller businesses aren’t immune. Anonymised SMEs running seasonal promotions may see web stores taken offline by DDoS attacks, costing valuable revenue.

Lesson: Monitor your website 24/7, use scalable hosting and consider DDoS mitigation tools.

AI and Deepfake Threats
Attackers increasingly use AI to mimic voices or emails. Even a small business can be tricked into transferring funds if employees aren’t aware of these scams.

Lesson: Always verify unusual requests through a secondary channel. Staff awareness is key.

Protect Your Business This Christmas

  • Train your staff before the festive season
  • Test backups and disaster recovery plans
  • Enable multi-factor authentication
  • Review cyber security measures
  • Monitor your systems 24/7

Even small steps can prevent hackers from ruining your holiday.

Takeaway: Cyber threats don’t take a holiday. Awareness and preparation can ensure your business enjoys a peaceful festive season.
