Blackpool based Top Gun Tools and Fixings, a specialist supplier of professional power tools, fixings, and fastenings, has continued to make strong progress on their path to Net Zero with ongoing support from the Blackpool Net Zero Business Academy.
When Managing director Chris Smith first joined the programme, his goal was to reduce electricity consumption and increase energy efficiency. An initial comprehensive energy audit led to a personalised decarbonisation action plan, highlighting opportunities such as switching to LED lighting, introducing electric vehicles and investing in on-site renewable energy.
Since then, Top Gun has completed the transition to 100 per cent LED lighting and added two electric vehicles to their fleet.
The next major step is the installation of solar panels, supported by battery storage to help store electricity generated over the weekend when the business is closed. With planning submitted and architectural drawings complete, installation is expected to begin in January 2026.
Chris said: “A key part of this progress has been the hands-on support provided by the academy.
“The team sourced competitive quotes for the solar panels and liaised directly with suppliers, making the entire process straightforward and manageable."
After learning that grant funding was available for businesses in the area, Chris has been able to successfully secure support to reduce initial project costs by almost 20 per cent.
Chris added: “The academy has guided us through every step of our journey to Net Zero so far.
"They sourced quotes, managed leasing with external companies and provided clear, practical advice on what to implement. The sustainability specialists make the whole process straightforward, and nothing is ever too much trouble.”
Alongside the measures that Top Gun are already implementing, the company are committed to recycling all waste. They are firmly focused on achieving full Net Zero, and are keen to explore any further recommendations from the Academy.
Chris said: “It’s a fantastic resource that local businesses should take advantage of.
“The tailored support and grant funding make a huge difference for any company looking to reduce their carbon footprint.”
Blackpool-based businesses ready to begin their Net Zero journey, reduce their carbon footprint and cut energy costs, are encouraged to contact the Blackpool Net Zero Business Academy to access fully funded support and enquire about available grant funding.
