Shaping the future of surveying: Our youth development programme

Future of surveying sss.jpg.jpg

We believe that investing in the next generation of young geospatial professionals is essential to the continued success and innovation of the surveying industry.

That’s why we’ve developed a dedicated Youth Development Programme to support aspiring surveyors through apprenticeships, internships, T Level placements, graduate placements and structured career pathways.

Our approach is firmly rooted in real-world experience, practical mentorship, and industry recognised qualifications. By combining hands-on learning with a clear route to employment, we aim to provide young people with job opportunities and fulfilling careers that grow with them.

Creating opportunities: Apprentices, trainees and work placements

Across both Site Surveying Services, we are proud to support a growing number of young and emerging professionals at various stages of their development. Each individual is given the opportunity to work alongside experienced surveyors, gaining technical skills, confidence and insight into the dynamic world of geospatial and engineering surveying.

A recent example of such is Marnie, who joined Site Surveying Services through a Blackburn College T Level course work placement.

Marnie impressed the team with her enthusiasm, work ethic and eagerness to learn, and was subsequently offered a full-time position as a trainee geospatial technician.

Her journey is a strong reflection of what’s possible when education and industry work hand-in-hand to support emerging talent.

Similarly,, our apprenticeship programme continues to grow. We have supported various apprenticeships who have all brought unique strengths, talents and fresh perspectives to our projects.

Our most recent apprenticeship-to-employment journey was with Callum and Louis.

Both were offered and took on full-time roles, with Callum currently undertaking the TSA Surveying Course with The Survey School.

Pathways to Surveying

To formalise and expand our commitment to early careers, we have launched the Pathway to Surveying – a specialist development programme designed to equip trainees with the practical experience and qualifications needed to thrive in the surveying profession.

Trainees on the Pathway to Surveying programme:

  • Work on live survey projects using advanced surveying equipment such as 3D laser scanners, GNSS receivers and UAVs.
  • Receive mentoring and on-site guidance from qualified, experienced professionals.
  • Progress towards formal qualifications through The Survey School, the UK’s only commercial training centre accredited by the Chartered Institution of Civil Engineering Surveyors (CICES)

This tailored route provides the clarity, structure and support young professionals need to move confidently into long-term careers in the industry.

Looking Ahead

At Site Surveying Services, we are proud to champion the next generation of geospatial professionals.

By offering clear routes into the industry, personalised support, and a culture of continuous learning, we are building a workforce that reflects the future we want to see – capable, confident, and committed to excellence.

Whether through apprenticeships, internships, placements, or the Pathway to Surveying, our Youth Development Programme reflects our core belief: when we invest in people, we invest in the future of our industry.

If you are an aspiring surveyor, educator, or organisation looking to collaborate with us on early careers initiatives, we would be delighted to hear from you.
