Darwen’s annual Christmas Lights Switch-On returns on Saturday, 16 November, and promises a spectacular day of celebrations designed to light up the season and drive significant economic support for the local community.

Organised by Crafty Vintage in collaboration with Blackburn with Darwen Council and Darwen Town Council, this year’s event will feature an unmissable headline set from 90s dance legends K-Klass, alongside a full day of family-friendly activities, local artisan markets, and community spirit.

As always, the event is about more than just festivities; it’s a powerful boost for local businesses.

With over 50 independent artisans and traders at Crafty Vintage’s festive markets, the day provides a unique opportunity for residents and visitors to shop locally and directly support East Lancashire’s small businesses.

“Events like this are essential for our community,” said Laura Johnson, co-founder of Crafty Vintage.

“Each purchase helps keep local businesses thriving, especially during such an important season. By supporting our artisans and vendors, we’re not just investing in gifts – we’re investing in the whole community.”

Local councillors have also highlighted the importance of the event’s economic impact. Councillor Phil Riley, Leader of Blackburn with Darwen Council, said, “The Christmas Lights Switch-On is not only a festive tradition but a vital way to encourage spending in our town centre.

Each year, we see how this event brings people together and brings significant footfall to our local businesses. It’s a great way for us all to celebrate while also directly supporting our community.”

A Day of Festive Activities for All Ages

The Switch-On is designed to be a full-day experience, packed with entertainment and activities suitable for all ages. Here’s a snapshot of what to expect:

  • Live Music and Performances: Alongside the main event with K-Klass, a lineup of local talent – including choirs, bands, and solo artists – will bring a mix of holiday classics and contemporary hits to the stage, creating a festive and vibrant atmosphere in Market Square.
  • Crafty Vintage Artisan Markets: With over 50 stalls, this year’s market offers everything from handmade crafts and seasonal foods to unique gifts and decorations. “Shopping local is more important than ever,” Johnson noted, “and this event is a fantastic way for our traders to showcase their creativity and passion to a wider audience.”
  • Family-Friendly Activities: Families can enjoy a wide range of activities, from Santa’s Grotto and festive crafts to face painting and interactive workshops. Children can even meet Father Christmas himself, adding an extra sprinkle of magic to their day.
  • Food and Drink Stalls: A variety of food and drink options will be available from market vendors and local cafes, serving up favourites like hot cocoa, mulled wine, and seasonal street food. Supporting these stalls not only satisfies cravings but also helps sustain local food businesses through the bustling festive period.
  • Christmas Lights Switch-On Ceremony: The day will culminate in the much-anticipated lights switch-on ceremony, which has become a beloved local tradition. Thousands gather each year to witness Market Square come to life, marking the official start of Darwen’s Christmas season.

Councillor Riley added, “We’re proud to support events that bring our community together and celebrate our local culture and economy. Darwen’s Switch-On is a shining example of how we can all come together to celebrate and invest in our town.”

A Celebration of Local Spirit and Economic Impact

Darwen’s Christmas Lights Switch-On is more than a festive celebration; it’s a community-driven event that supports East Lancashire’s economy and small businesses. Every purchase and every bite taken at the event represents a choice to support independent traders and the local economy over online conglomerates.

Join us in Darwen on the 16th of November to experience the spirit of the season with live music, markets, and the ceremonial lights switch-on. Let’s make this a Christmas to remember, supporting local businesses and celebrating our community! For the full programme and updates, visit www.darwentowncentre.co.uk.
