The North West of England is a fantastic starting point for exploring some of the UK’s most beautiful destinations. Whether you’re after breathtaking countryside, scenic coastlines, or historic sites, there are plenty of great getaways within a short drive. Here are some of the best places to visit:

The Lake District (45 minutes – 1 hour from Lancaster)

A UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Lake District is a paradise for nature lovers. Explore stunning lakes like Windermere and Ullswater, take on hiking trails such as Scafell Pike, or visit historic sites like Beatrix Potter’s Hill Top. Don’t forget to try the famous Grasmere Gingerbread! If you need to charge your electric vehicle in the Lake District, there are many options around the various lakes.

The Peak District (2 – 2.5 hours from Lancaster)

Ideal for a weekend escape, the Peak District offers rolling hills, deep valleys, and charming villages. Hike Mam Tor or Kinder Scout, explore the grand Chatsworth House, or visit Bakewell to sample the famous Bakewell Pudding. The Monsal Trail is perfect for cycling through scenic landscapes. If you need to charge an EV, you can do so at these locations.

Snowdonia (2 – 2.5 hours from Lancaster)

For adventure seekers, Snowdonia National Park in North Wales is a must-visit. Climb Mount Snowdon, the highest peak in Wales, or take the scenic Snowdon Mountain Railway. Discover the Italian-style village of Portmeirion, marvel at waterfalls like Swallow Falls, or experience the thrill of Zip World, home to the world’s fastest zip line.

The Yorkshire Dales (45 minutes – 1 hour from Lancaster)

This area is known for its picturesque countryside, charming villages, and historic landmarks. Keen walkers can take on the Three Peaks challenge (Ingleborough, Whernside, and Pen-y-Ghent), while those seeking a more relaxed experience can explore Malham Cove or the Ribblehead Viaduct. Cheese lovers should visit the Wensleydale Creamery in Hawes. EVs can be charged in these locations.

The Cotswolds (3.5 – 4 hours from Lancaster)

A little further afield, the Cotswolds is a postcard-perfect destination with traditional stone cottages and rolling countryside. Visit iconic villages like Bibury and Bourton-on-the-Water, explore the historic Sudeley Castle, or enjoy a traditional afternoon tea in one of the region’s cosy tearooms. If you need to charge your car, you can do so in these locations.

North Wales Coast (2 – 2.5 hours from Lancaster)

For a coastal retreat, North Wales offers charming seaside towns and fascinating history. Llandudno’s Victorian promenade and the Great Orme tramway make for a relaxing day out, while Conwy Castle offers stunning views and rich history. Further west, Anglesey boasts beautiful beaches and historic sites like Beaumaris Castle. North Wales offer many points to charge your electric car.

The Scottish Borders (2.5 – 3 hours from Lancaster)

A perfect mix of history and scenic beauty, the Scottish Borders is home to Melrose Abbey, Jedburgh’s historic sites, and the stunning home of Sir Walter Scott, Abbotsford. The rolling hills and rivers also provide excellent walking and cycling trails. Find charging points for EVs.

The Ribble Valley (1 – 1.5 hours from Lancaster)

A hidden gem in Lancashire, the Ribble Valley offers stunning countryside, fascinating history, and excellent food. Visit Clitheroe Castle, walk up Pendle Hill (famous for the Pendle Witch Trials), and dine at one of the region’s renowned gastropubs, such as the Michelin-starred Northcote. Electric charging points can be found in the area.

Prepare Your Car for the Journey

Before heading off, ensure your car is serviced and MOT’d and road-trip ready. It may also be worth looking into a National Trust Membership (annual adult membership - £96, a young person's (18-25) membership - £48 and a junior membership (0-17) - £12. Under 5s go free) whilst visiting these places to take advantage of free parking - costs for parking can range from anywhere between £3 for a day to £8 a day.

Before you go, make sure you check the Countryside Code - rules that visitors must follow when you are visiting parts of the countryside. This helps to keep natural areas clean, tidy and safe for all visitors.
