A mediation service to turn employment and HR conflict between parties into collaboration has been launched by employment law, HR and health and safety firm AfterAthena.
The launch of the initiative by AfterAthena, part of Preston based Napthens Group, comes as the UK faces a rising number of employment tribunals involving unresolved disputes between businesses and their staff.
Unresolved disputes that end up at a tribunal slow decision-making at the business involved, strain team relationships and have a negative impact on productivity.
Headed by Jade McEvoy, HR consultant at AfterAthena with more than 15 years of experience in HR, the service provides an efficient and cost-effective approach to dispute resolution, focused on collaborative problem-solving to help reduce expenses and shorten the time needed to reach a resolution.
In her role as a neutral third-party accredited mediator, Jade provides a voluntary, confidential, and structured negotiation process.
Unlike arbitration or litigation, her role as a mediator doesn’t impose a decision but guides the conversation, helping to clarify issues and support the parties in dispute to reach a mutually acceptable solution.
Jade said: “A key advantage of mediation is the presence of an impartial third party because a neutral mediator guides the discussion, ensures all perspectives are fairly heard and helps parties explore practical solutions.
“This neutrality promotes a balanced and respectful environment, encouraging open communication, increasing the likelihood of a constructive and mutually satisfactory outcome.”
She said that mediation typically resolves issues far more quickly than formal processes, allowing staff to enjoy a more harmonious working relationship and organisations to focus on priorities.
Jade added: “Mediation is conducted privately, protecting sensitive business information and personnel issues. This confidentiality helps organisations avoid reputational risk and maintains trust among employees.
“Integrating mediation into policy and procedures reinforces a culture of respect, communication, and problem-solving. Employees feel heard, valued, and empowered to address concerns proactively rather than defaulting straight to formal process.
“Over time, this strengthens morale, reduces turnover and enhances overall workplace satisfaction.”
Chris Boyle, partner and head of AfterAthena, said: “In today’s evolving business landscape, disagreements and disputes are almost inevitable.
"Whether they stem from workplace conflicts, or interdepartmental misunderstandings, unresolved disputes can drain resources, damage relationships, and disrupt productivity.
“As organisations strive to maintain efficiency and reduce operational risk, mediation has emerged as a strategic approach to managing conflicts constructively and cost-effectively.”
