One of Blackpool’s most iconic landmarks, The Grand Theatre, is taking bold steps to reduce its carbon footprint with expert support from the Blackpool Net Zero Business Academy.
The Grade II listed theatre, which has been entertaining audiences since 1894, is renowned for its ornate plasterwork, baroque ceilings and cantilevered balconies. However, the theatre faces the challenge on how to make a 19th-century building thrive in an evolving low carbon world.
Deputy chief executive Colin Johnston, who has led The Grand Theatre’s maintenance and sustainability efforts for almost thirteen years, recently turned to the Blackpool Net Zero Business Academy for expert guidance to help drive further reductions in carbon emissions and operating costs.
Sustainability Specialists at the Academy started by carrying out a detailed energy audit of the theatre. The findings identified key areas where energy was being lost and where emissions could be reduced, resulting in a bespoke decarbonisation action plan designed specifically for the complexities of a listed Victorian building.
As a listed building, The Grand Theatre faces limitations around insulation, double glazing, and major system overhauls. Working with the Academy has connected the team with experts who specialise in finding creative, compliant solutions for heritage buildings.
The theatre has already begun implementing several of the recommendations, including replacing traditional lighting with energy-efficient LEDs and planning the installation of motion and daylight sensors. Early results show measurable reductions in energy use and costs.
The benefits have extended beyond technical advice. The Academy’s guidance has provided reassurance and a deeper understanding of the theatre’s wider environmental impact.
“The Academy has given us context,” says Colin. “We now understand not just our direct energy use, but the wider impact of our operations. It’s been encouraging to know we’re on the right path.”
Looking ahead, The Grand Theatre plans to work with the Academy to deliver carbon literacy training for staff and trustees, ensuring sustainability becomes embedded across all aspects of its operations.
