Preston’s historic 140-tonne Tram Bridge is now entering its final stages of transformation, with an official opening scheduled for Spring 2026.
The rejuvenated bridleway will soon welcome pedestrians, cyclists, and even horses, marking a significant milestone in the city’s infrastructure improvements.
With the bridge structure now in place, the next phase focuses on completing the decking and panelling, installing handrails, and removing scaffolding.
Surrounding works will also take priority, including masonry enhancements and parapet installation to ensure safe and seamless access.
Lighting will play a key role in the bridge’s design, with power and connections set to be installed in early 2026.
The lighting scheme has been carefully planned to complement the bridge and its natural surroundings while minimising impact on local wildlife.
After more than 18 months on site, Eric Wright Civil Engineering will begin reinstating the area and resurfacing the Old Tram Road ahead of the grand opening. These efforts will restore the route and provide a welcoming approach to the new bridge.
Councillor Valerie Wise, cabinet member for community wealth building, said: “Watching the bridge finally lifted into place was an incredible sight, a true milestone for Preston.
"While there’s still work to complete before the grand opening in Spring 2026, this achievement marks a significant step for the project and for the city.”
Gavin Hulme, Eric Wright Civil Engineering’s managing director said: “Reaching this point in the project is a very proud moment for our whole team and it’s been great to deliver this monumental project with Preston City Council.
"The seamless lifting of all four bridge sections was a demonstration of the precise engineering and dedication of everyone involved in delivering infrastructure that will serve the local community for generations.”
The replacement Tram Bridge has been delivered by Preston City Council using part of its £20m grant awarded by the UK Government, with an additional £1m from Lancashire County Council.
Earlier this month, Lancashire Business View reported Eric Wright Civil Engineering team had started work on the bridge in Preston following the demolition of the old structure and the reimagining of this historic crossing.
The bridge will reconnect the north and south side of the River Ribble.
