Our people, our values, our mission

Interested in finding out more about what drives us here at Fagan & Whalley? Our philosophy can be broken down into three core elements...

1 - Our People

At Fagan & Whalley, people remain at the heart of everything we do - not just the people who trust us to provide an excellent service, but also those who form our amazing team.

Valuing our people is a core element of our philosophy. That’s why we continue to make significant investments into the latest technologies and equipment, and the professional development of team members in all departments, to ensure our staff are happy in their work, and passionate about delivering an exceptional level of service as a result.

“In addition to receiving a salary which accurately reflects their performance, members of our team can also expect a host of other benefits, including enhanced holiday entitlement, and involvement with our cycle to work scheme,” says F&W Head of HR, Emma Wearden.

“When the pandemic struck in 2020, our top priority, along with adapting our operations to suit the needs of our clients, was to ensure all of our staff members would receive the support they needed. We felt that it was important to reassure everyone that whether it was their work, their personal, or their social lives that had been impacted, they were not alone, and could seek help whenever they needed it, which is why we made the investment into the Smart Health Service.

“Smart Health is a free online service which is available to all current employees, extending to cohabiting partners and any children they may have (up to the age of 21), as part of the employee benefit of life assurance that we offer. Available to use at any time, Smart Health offers round-the-clock access to GPs, a personalised health check report, specialist nutrition consultation and a personalised fitness programme, as well as access to mental health support and advice from world-leading medical experts and diagnosticians.

“This service also provides four free counselling sessions to employees and members of their family should they need it, which has been vital for many of our colleagues who have found this time to be particularly difficult.

“In order to promote keeping a healthy body and a healthy mind, we’ve also invested in subsidised gym memberships for everyone in our Lancashire-based team, and we’re currently working out similar arrangements for those based in Coventry.

“Most recently, our list of employee benefits has expanded to include a death in service compensation, which will offer a financial package to the family of any employee who passes whilst employed with us, as a means of providing support and helping to relieve some of the stresses they may be facing at an already difficult time.

“At Fagan & Whalley, we’re continually reviewing our operations and making investments into schemes and programmes which will help to enrich the quality of life of everyone in our team. We’re very much in it together, and this approach is a key part of who we are and how we do things.”

2 - Our Values

One of our core values is the pride we all take in our work. We remain committed to our customers, and the various quality accreditations we’ve worked hard to acquire over the years are a key part of that commitment, offering a testament to the dedication of our teams in working to the highest standards, and providing our customers with the peace of mind that their goods will remain part of a carefully moderated end-to-end process.

“Alongside our commitment to our clients, which remains high on our list of priorities, we’re equally committed to doing our part for the environment, making every effort to minimise our carbon footprint in order to create a more sustainable future,” explains F&W Business Strategy Director, Sam Fagan.

“Part of this comes in our aim to make our operations as efficient as possible, by using the latest technology and investing in modern vehicles which are friendlier to the environment, but planning is also a big part of it. Our expert team of transport planners always ensure the consignments and journeys planned for each vehicle are consolidated and organised in accordance with our goals to achieve maximum efficiency.”

3 - Our Mission

Being incredibly proud of our heritage and vibrant community which surrounds us in Burnley, where our company was first established, we value the work of local, national and international charities in equal measure, and make it a core part of our mission to give something back.

“Along with regularly supporting community interest schemes in the local area, we’re equally committed in contributing to charitable, environmental and community improvement causes which exist beyond Burnley, beyond Lancashire, and even beyond the UK,” says Sam Fagan.

“As such, we are proud to be corporate partners of the Burnley Bondholders organisation, whose efforts to promote the town’s strong enterprising network have helped to put Burnley on the map. We’re also proud to be Gold Donors for Transaid, whose mission it is to improve road safety and solve transport challenges in economically developing countries; and we’re equally pleased to represent the hard work of Blackburn Youth Zone as a patron supporter, with a branded vehicle in our fleet. We hope that these efforts, amongst others, will help to further the causes of each of the charitable organisations we have the pleasure of working alongside.

“But it’s also important to note that our mission to give something back goes beyond our work with charities. At Fagan & Whalley, we’re passionate about being a part of the UK haulage industry, and we have felt, in light of recent challenges, that part of our responsibility is to not only ensure the longevity of our own business, but also to give our best efforts in supporting the industry as a whole through this particularly difficult time.

“In response to the national driver shortage and the dwindling numbers of people entering our industry, we’ve recently launched our Future-bound scheme, which has been designed to encourage interest in the transport industry and make driving careers more accessible. Open to all applicants with a UK driving licence, the scheme will see drivers start out with a F&W branded 3.5T vehicle and receive training from our in-house instructors in order to work their way towards a professional HGV qualification.”
