Marsden Building Society is celebrating the early success of its solar energy initiative at its Principal Office in Nelson, delivering environmental benefits in just four months.
Installed by Lancashire-based Green Shield Group, the solar panels have already generated 23,000 kWh of clean electricity, with 13,000 kWh used onsite. Any surplus energy is fed back into the grid to support local demand.
The 61.6 kWp solar photovoltaic (PV) system maximises available roof space to produce as much renewable energy as possible.
During the summer months, more than 60% of the electricity used at the society’s principal office came directly from solar power, resulting in a carbon saving of over 2,000 kg of CO2e between June and September 2025.
This achievement highlights the Society’s commitment to sustainability and its proactive approach to reducing its environmental footprint.
Viki Thomas, financial controller at Marsden Building Society, said: “We’re extremely proud of the work we’re doing to reduce our carbon footprint, and this project has allowed us to see the real-time impact of our energy choices.
"Through a live feed, we’re able to see the energy we’re generating and using, and it’s incredibly rewarding to know that we’re making a difference not just for our business, but for our communities and the planet.”
The solar panels are projected to generate 58,000 kWh annually, covering 46 per cent of the society’s electricity needs and saving approximately seven tonnes of CO2 each year.
Following the success of this initiative, the Marsden plans to expand solar installations to other Society-owned sites, reinforcing its long-term commitment to building a greener future.
