A family-run east Lancashire haulage business that can trace its roots back almost half a century has gone into administration with the loss of 13 jobs.
Earl Transport called in the administrators after facing increasing financial pressures driven by rising operating costs and the wider economic challenges affecting the sector.
The sudden loss of a key contract added further strain on the business, leaving it unable to continue trading, according to the administrators.
Ian McCulloch and Trevor Binyon of Opus Restructuring and Insolvency have been appointed joint administrators.
In a statement they said they were focused on realising the assets of the company and actively seeking interest from potential buyers.
They added: "Our priority is to secure the best possible outcome for creditors while conducting the administration process in an orderly and transparent manner."
Last October Earl Transport’s owner Peter Hughes was given a lifetime achievement award for his services to the industry.
The company was founded in 1978 by Peter and his uncle Geoffrey Newlove. Its customers over the years have included Blackburn headquartered Pets Choice.
