HPA Architects were delighted to host Muyiwa Oki, RIBA President 2023-2025, who was visiting Lancaster this week to collect an honorary degree from Lancaster University.
Challenging architects to be agents of change, Muyiwa started in his role as RIBA President in 2023, sharing his Biennial Plan priority was to support practices to be a force for good.
The youngest, and eightieth, person to hold the position of President in RIBA’s 189-year history, Muyiwa Oki - an architect at construction consultancy, Mace Group - was the founder and chair of the Multi-Ethnic Group and Allies network, driving cultural change for peers across the globe. Muyiwa’s career has focused on large-scale infrastructure projects, including HS2 Euston and the North London heat and power project.
Having previously stated the main highlight of his role is having the opportunity to meet people who share his passion to improve lives through our built environment, our Junior team were excited to take advantage of this opportunity to participate in a group chat with Muyiwa, discovering his thoughts on architecture as a force for good, sharing their experiences on their journey to become Architects, and discussing their visions for the future of the built environment.
Trainee Architects Jia, Holly, John, Georgia and Sam spent a valuable afternoon discussing productivity and collaboration with Muyiwa and sharing HPA’s vision to create built environments that make a positive, lasting impact, receiving inspiration and encouragement from the RIBA President to shape the future of practice.
