Department Focus: Compliance

Here at Fagan & Whalley, there’s a lot that goes on behind the scenes to ensure that we can provide the most excellent service to our clients and their end-consumers alike.

One area of the business that is instrumental to upholding the highest standards across the board is our Compliance Department. This month, we’ve peeled back the curtain of our Albion House Head Office to find out what really goes on behind the scenes.

Who’s in the team?

Our Compliance Department consists of nine exceptional individuals who are committed to maintaining the highest levels of compliance. Led by the following three managers, the team are in great hands!

Martyn Richardson - Head of Compliance

Steering the ship is Martyn Richardson, who has been a valued member of our team for almost a decade and brings with him a wealth of knowledge and insight from his previous role as a Transport Manager. His leadership and expertise have been instrumental in ensuring the department runs smoothly - and as a result, in the continual growth and success of Fagan & Whalley.

Laura Howarth - HR Manager

Meanwhile, Laura, our HR Manager, has been a dedicated member of the Fagan & Whaley family since 2014. Initially joining our Administration department, she has since served as a HR Advisor for five years before just recently being appointed as our HR Manager. Her role is crucial to the success of the department, as she plays a pivotal role in managing our team’s HR, ensuring Fagan & Whalley are supported, engaged and equipped with the resources we need to thrive.

Gareth Jones - Training Manager

Finally, we’ve got Gareth Jones - our brilliant Training Manager. Gareth leads our Training Team and plays a pivotal role in the development of our F&W infrastructure. As an RTITB-accredited driver himself, he brings a wealth of experience and expertise to the role - ensuring all new drivers are fully qualified and equipped to handle a lifetime of success on the road. Additionally, Gareth facilitates career development and progression for our team members.

What is the role of the compliance department?

The Compliance department here at Fagan & Whalley has a multifaceted role within our company. The team are responsible for ensuring the health, safety and well-being of our staff while also ensuring that we maintain legal and regulatory compliance in all aspects of our operations. This includes overseeing our transport management processes and ensuring that our vehicles are operating safely and efficiently.

The department also plays a crucial role in the training and development of our employees, ensuring that our team has the necessary accreditations and certifications to carry out their roles effectively.

What is the compliance department working on for 2023?

“We wear many hats in this department - meaning we’re always busy, but we wouldn’t have it any other way!” explains Martyn Richardson. We caught up with the rest of the team to see what projects are keeping them busy over the upcoming few months…

Bringing licence acquisition models in-house
Firstly, the Training department, led by Gareth Jones, are looking forward to bringing a number of new Licence Acquisition modules in-house. We’ve been lucky enough to have built an in-house DVSA-approved vehicle reversing area which will give us the opportunity to bring more of our facilities and training in-house. This is a further testament to our commitment to continuously improving our facilities and training resources - ensuring our team has the skills and expertise to excel in their roles.

Core company policy
At the same time, our HR team is working on creating a modular employee handbook to provide clarity and remove ambiguity from our working culture whilst also aligning contractual agreements with daily operations. Efforts are also being made by our team to ensure that each member of the Fagan & Whalley family are aware of the benefits available to them.

Health & Safety - NEBOSH National Diploma
Finally, we’re thrilled to announce that F&W HSEQ Officer, Joe Sidlow, is currently working towards his NEBOSH General Certificate for Occupational Health and Safety Management Professionals. This is a great achievement for Joe and means that here at Fagan & Whalley, we’ve got yet another highly qualified Health & Safety professional on our team.

“It goes without saying that we’re incredibly grateful for all of the hard work that goes on behind the scenes to ensure the excellence of our company. And we would like to thank each and every member of the team that helps to keep the cogs turning! At Fagan & Whalley, we are committed to continuing to invest in our Compliance department in order to maintain the highest levels of excellence for our team, clients and end-consumers alike.” explains Martyn.
