Nelson based specialist workwear and Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) manufacturers, Dale Techniche, have issued new guidance on the care, maintenance and traceability of PPE.
They are urging employers to evaluate the role garment condition plays in workplace safety and regulatory compliance.
Known for producing high-performance protective clothing for hazardous environments, Dale Techniche say that while PPE is designed to protect against serious risks, its effectiveness is only guaranteed when garments are properly maintained and monitored throughout their working life.
Donna Emmot, operations director said: “Workwear and PPE don’t usually come with a ‘use by’ date. However, the absence of an expiry label should never be mistaken for unlimited lifespan. Protective garments should be assessed according to their condition, fit and ongoing performance rather than simply their age.”
Dale Techniche expresses how visible deterioration including fraying seams, fabric thinning or tearing, can significantly reduce protective reliability.
Permanent staining caused by chemicals or biohazards may indicate contamination beyond safe recovery.
And how if hi-vis garments have cracked or peeling reflective tape can impair visibility in low-light environments, directly affecting wearer safety.
Donna added: “Generally, PPE should be replaced when it is damaged, excessively soiled, deformed, ill-fitting or no longer functioning as originally designed. If there is any doubt about its effectiveness, that alone is often reason enough to take it out of service. Confidence in PPE is essential to protecting the wearer’s safety and ensuring businesses meet their legal obligations.”
Dale Techniche also highlight that garment care extends beyond the end of a shift. Incorrect storage can gradually degrade specialist materials, particularly those with flame-retardant treatments or chemical-resistant coatings.
Donna said: “PPE should be kept in environments that are clean, cool, dry and protected from direct sunlight.
"Through storing PPE correctly, businesses not only extend the operational life of garments but also maintain their certified protective qualities.
"Similarly, laundering processes must follow manufacturer guidelines precisely. Incorrect washing temperatures or tumble drying settings can damage fibres designed to withstand arc flash, molten metal splash or other high-risk conditions.”
As part of their commitment to compliance and transparency, Dale Techniche heat seal a unique QR code into every garment.
The QR code provides immediate access to that specific garment’s data, the date of manufacture, full technical specification and comprehensive user information, offering complete traceability for every garment produced.
By combining precise manufacturing standards with digital traceability, Dale Techniche aims to help businesses strengthen safety practices and ensure compliance in the workplace.
Organisations seeking advice on PPE performance, garment lifecycle management or upgrading their workwear are encouraged to contact one of the specialists.
