Tribunal Review

Businesses in Lancashire will welcome plans by the Government to review the employee tribunal system, according to a firm of leading consultants.

Philip Shuker, of Lancashire-based yourbusinessline.com has welcomed a consultation which could see the length of time an employee has to serve before they can take their employer to a tribunal from one year to two.

He said: “Small and medium sized businesses work within very tight profit margins and small numbers of staff, so the impact of having an employee who is not up to the job can be huge.

“Although businesses have rigorous interviews and ‘sifting’ procedures, it is only when someone is doing the job for real that an employer can tell whether they are the right person for the role.

“In my experience, businesses do not take sacking people lightly, but providing they follow some basic rules regarding HR, then they are well within their rights to make a judgement on whether they think a particular person has a future in their appointed role.”
