A major manufacturing milestone has been celebrated as the 75 millionth sandwich has been filled and packed on James Hall & Co. Ltd’s production line.

The business’ Great Northern Sandwich Company has been making some of the North of England’s favourite sandwiches and wraps since 2009, with thousands distributed to SPAR stores every day.

A celebratory 75 millionth sandwich pack in gold and black was created for the occasion and SPAR Lancaster University hosted a special event to mark the achievement too.

The store sells the highest volume of sandwiches in the James Hall & Co. Ltd G&E Murgatroyd company-owned store division, and free sandwiches were given away to hungry customers as a thank you for their loyalty and support.

Another milestone is on schedule to be reached in March when James Hall & Co. Ltd’s 1p charity sandwich sale pledge reaches £750,000 since its inception in October 2011.

The initiative is boosted annually by a donation increase to 10p on the sale of the seasonal special Christmas sandwich.

Marie Curie, the UK’s leading end of life charity and SPAR UK’s national charity partner, has been the beneficiary of the initiative since November 2016.

Andrew Barnes, trading director at James Hall & Co. Ltd, said: “We are proud to reach this fantastic milestone. Sandwiches are the bread and butter of our food manufacturing business, and it is a huge achievement for the department who make a strong range of delicious, high-quality products to scale day in and day out.

“Sandwiches and wraps form an integral part of our retail offer in both our company-owned SPAR stores and with our independent retailers, with the meal deal being a hugely popular mechanism for SPAR North of England customers who want a great value and flavourful lunch.

“To top off this incredible manufacturing milestone, we are also very close to reaching £750,000 raised through the charity sandwich pledge, and Marie Curie is a wonderful cause we are delighted to support.”

Imogen Duffin, corporate partnerships manager at Marie Curie, said: “We are very grateful for the continuing support of SPAR UK, and congratulate James Hall & Co. Ltd on this impressive and tasty achievement.

“Over the years, SPAR UK have been a valued partner to Marie Curie and through their generous donations have helped us provide expert end of life care and support for people with any illness they are likely to die from.”

James Hall & Co. Ltd is a fifth-generation family business which serves a network of independent SPAR retailers and company-owned SPAR stores across Northern England six days a week from its base at Bowland View in Preston.
