From teaching in schools to creating world champions, Scot Tudhope, founder of Unique Training Centre (UTC) in Blackpool, has turned a lifelong passion for martial arts into a powerful force for change. Now, with the support of the Blackpool Growth Business Academy, he is building secure and sustainable growth for his business.
Scot founded UTC in 2010 while doing a degree in sports development and coaching, although his journey began much earlier. He took up martial arts in 1995, and by 2001 he was travelling the country, teaching in some of the most exclusive schools. During this time he realised he could use his skills to make a lasting impact in his community.
“I wanted to give something back, to offer them what I never had when I was growing up. I wanted to make a difference, a lot of kids seemed to be heading down the wrong path, I felt I could offer something to guide them and help them,” Scot explained.
UTC has produced British, English and European champions as well as World Champions in judo, Brazilian jiu-jitsu, and MMA. Beyond this success, UTC has made a tangible impact in Blackpool. They run mentorship programmes for young people, provide free training for police and prison officers, and have donated hundreds of school uniforms to local families in need.
Like many founders, Scot reached a stage where passion alone wasn’t enough, and he needed strategic help with marketing and admin. Turning to the Blackpool Growth Business Academy, he was introduced to growth specialist John Townsend, who helped reframe UTC as a sustainable business.
Together, they created a comprehensive growth action plan covering everything from social media and lead generation to networking opportunities as well as having discussions and clarity around pensions. Scot was also encouraged to strengthen his professional presence online: separating personal and business Instagram accounts, improving website SEO and becoming more active on LinkedIn.
Scot plans to continue working with the Academy, attending events focused on social media, marketing, and business leadership, which are all areas he wants to build confidence in.
“The Academy has been fantastic,” says Scot. “Having an experienced growth specialist working with me on a 121 basis has been so valuable, and I am grateful for the support I have received. I would encourage businesses to get in touch and don’t be afraid to ask for help.”
Blackpool businesses looking to grow and scale effectively are encouraged to contact the Blackpool Growth Business Academy for tailored support from one of the growth specialists.
