BAKO has finalised a deal with food waste fighting app Too Good to Go which will provide free sign-up for all BAKO customers, with BAKO also donating £25 for every sign-up to food redistribution charity FareShare.

Launched in 2016, Too Good To Go is the world’s largest anti-food waste app. It lets people buy surplus food from local food businesses to stop it from going to waste. Consumers simply download the free Too Good To Go app and search for nearby bakeries, restaurants, retailers and producers with unsold food. App users then purchase a ‘Magic Bag’, collect it at an allotted time and enjoy it. Operating in 16 countries, with 43 million app installs and 107,000 partner stores globally, Too Good to Go has saved 88 million Magic Bags of food from going to waste worldwide.

The deal brokered by BAKO is aimed at getting independent bakers across the UK involved with the app in an attempt to reduce bakery related food waste across the country.

BAKO Commercial Director David Armstrong said: “According to the statistics, one third of all food is wasted and food waste accounts for 10% of all greenhouse gases. That equates to 1.3billion tonnes of food wasted every year whilst 870 million people go hungry.

“With 44% of all bread currently wasted, bakeries across the UK have a huge opportunity to help tackle this cycle of waste, which is why we are very proud to have partnered with Too Good to Go in providing free access to the scheme for all our members.

“As well as free sign-ups for our members, we will donate £25 for every sign-up to FareShare, which redistributes good quality surplus food to more than 10,500 frontline charities and community groups across the country.”

Paschalis Loucaides, UK Managing Director at Too Good To Go said: “I’m thrilled to be launching this partnership with BAKO to help bring even more independent bakeries into our food waste fighting community. If we are to take a bite out of the UK’s food waste problem we need as many businesses as possible taking steps to reduce the volume of food being thrown away, and with this latest partnership I’m confident the baking industry can lead the way.”

Established over fifty years, BAKO Group distributes bakery products to customers across the UK from three national depots in Durham, Preston and Wimbledon. With a multi-temperature fleet of over 70 vehicles, the company provides independent bakers and caterers with a wide range of ingredients and finished products from quality suppliers, as well as its own BAKO Select branded range.

BAKO Group’s full list of divisions includes BAKO Ltd, BAKO Northern and Scotland, and BAKO South Eastern.

Its industry accreditations include the BRC Global Standard for Storage and Distribution.
