Project Overview
Since 1978, Ramsay Timber has been a customer focused family business based in Appley Bridge near Wigan. Environmental responsibility is at the core of their business values and 45 years on, directors Jonathan Ramsay & Nicola Lindley decided to investigate the feasibility of a solar PV installation to further this desire to leave a positive impact upon the environment.
Installation
Thompsons Solar was tasked with designing a system that would maximise the roof space available to generate power to off-set on site energy demand at Ramsay Timber.
A number of factors were considered in the design including the roof skylights, shading from surrounding trees and access for future maintenance. Due to local grid constraints, the system was re-configured to enable limitation on the amount of power exported. Whilst most power generated will be used on site, this is still a consideration the DNO must make and an adjustment that can be made through use of additional equipment on site.
The installation process is split to allow for spring deployment of the largest array making the most of the longer summer days. This element includes 542 x 420W with the second phase incorporating a further 212 x 420W panels.
The system is connected to the grid via inverters and to comply with limitation requirements, these units work in conjunction with an energy management system.
Suitable scaffolding and edge protection was installed around the perimeter of the roof. Cargo netting was also installed below the skylights to enable our teams to work safely during installation.

Completion Commissioning, Performance
Upon completion of this commercial solar installation, the system was commissioned and tested and is now fully operational. Remote monitoring enables the system to be monitored to ensure it is performing correctly over the lifetime of the installation.
Boasting a remarkable 22.6 per cent return on investment, the system will fully recoup its costs in just over six years. This investment not only pays for itself but the client is now benefiting from cleaner, greener power generated on site.
