Preston-based recruitment agency, Spencer Clarke Group, has released the Ultimate Interview Guide 2023 to coincide with what is historically the busiest time of year for recruiters.

Within the interview guide, jobseekers can discover the types of interview style which could be used, common interview questions, what to research beforehand and how to bounce back from an unsuccessful interview.

Jobseekers can also discover how to make a great first impression, signs the interview is going well and how to master the virtual interview. Since 2019, the use of video interviews has increased by 57 per cent, particularly for first stage interviews. Despite Covid restrictions lifting, virtual interviews is a trend which has remained which means jobseekers must be prepared in case they are invited to one.

Also featured is information on what the STAR technique is and how to use this method when answering questions within the interview. The STAR method can be used when answering competency based questions such as ‘Describe a time when you faced a difficult challenge and how you overcame it.’

STAR is an acronym for Situation, Task, Action and Result; within the ‘Situation’, the interviewee should give context of their business/job role to the interviewer. For ‘Task’, the interviewee should describe which challenge they were tasked with. For ‘Action’, the interviewee should explain what actions they took to overcome the challenge. For ‘Result’, the interviewee should share the outcome of their actions and subsequent impact which it made to the business.

“Attending an interview can be daunting, particularly if you haven’t been to one for a number of years. To be successful, you need to put your best foot forward because it’s competitive out there!” said managing director, Mike Shorrock.

Shorrock continued: “There is a lot to do and remember before, during and after the interview which is why we’ve compiled all our advice and tips into a handy magazine. It’s part of the Spencer Clarke Group mission to positively impact lives and sharing this knowledge is just one of the ways in which we do this.”
