Leyland Trucks donates DAF XD to support Cornwall College’s Reservist training programme

Leyland Trucks has achieved silver status in the Defence Employer Recognition Scheme.

The recognition marks a significant step forward in the company’s commitment to supporting ex-military personnel and reservists, both within its workforce and throughout the wider community.

Since joining the scheme in 2024, Leyland Trucks has moved quickly to build a framework that supports the transition of service personnel into civilian careers.

This includes a HR policy which guarantees interviews for military forces applicants who meet the job role criteria, alongside a series of new initiatives that reflect the company’s proactive approach to fostering an inclusive, forces-friendly environment.

Among the measures introduced are two fully paid volunteering days per year for Adult Cadet Force Volunteers, the appointment of two Armed Forces Champions to lead advocacy and support across the business, and the launch of a dedicated Military Support Network.

This network is designed to connect veterans and reservists within the business, helping to foster a sense of community and peer support.

Leyland Trucks has also made a significant donation of a DAF truck to Cornwall College to support military training, as well as assisting a local sea cadet force with a boat renovation project.

The company’s involvement in the National Transition Event has further demonstrated its commitment to engaging directly with ex-forces individuals and supporting their shift to civilian life through meaningful career opportunities.

Phil Jones, managing director at Leyland Trucks, said: “Achieving Silver status is a proud milestone that reflects the real cultural progress we’ve made over the past year. It recognises not just our intent, but the meaningful actions we’ve taken to support veterans, reservists and cadets – both within our business and across the wider community.

“This journey has strengthened our workplace culture, built stronger bonds between our people, and reinforced our belief that a diverse, inclusive team brings real strength to our business. Our new Military Support Network is a great example of that in action, creating a space for connection, support and shared purpose.

“We’re committed to continuing this work – not just because it’s the right thing to do, but because it enriches who we are as a company.”

Leyland Trucks is one of more than 11,000 organisations that have pledged their support through the Armed Forces Covenant.

The initiative calls on employers to take a fair and empathetic approach toward service leavers and their families, helping them to successfully navigate the challenges of civilian life and employment.

For Leyland Trucks, the Silver Award signals to potential recruits that military experience is not just welcome, but valued.

Leyland Trucks is part of PACCAR, a US-based organisation recognised as a military-friendly employer and a participant in the Hiring Our Heroes programme led by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Foundation.

The company is proud to echo those same values here in the UK, actively supporting servicemen and women in building meaningful careers and successful futures beyond the military.
