A Lancashire social media consultancy was called upon to advise University of Salford students on how to use their online activity to boost their employability.
Graham Campbell, managing director of Moose Media Management, took part in the university’s Unlocking Employability event for students and graduates last week.Graham led a series of round table discussions, offering students an insight into running social media profiles that won’t threaten their employability. He also covered ways to use social media effectively when searching for jobs and developing successful networks online.
The Unlocking Employability event aimed to offer students advice on career development and making the move into employment.Graham Campbell of Moose Media Management said, “Starting out on a career path is far different in 2016 to how it was when I left university back in the 90s. It’s easy to forget that what we post and share on our social media profiles can be seen by potential employers and recruiters. Through my round table discussions with students I was keen to share insight and advice on how we can use our social media profiles effectively to build networks that could ultimately lead to that dream job.
“It was good to have the opportunity to interact informally with students and graduates through the round table discussions.”Other topics led by industry experts included the value of work placements, the labour market and internationalisation following Brexit, and entrepreneurial ways of working.
Tahira Majothi, careers consultant at University of Salford, said, “The aim of the event was to help our students and graduates to better understand the needs of the labour market and sector trends, to better develop their employability and work readiness. It gave them the opportunity to speak to employers about key topics such as finding opportunities, using social media in recruitment, effective applications, plus placements, work experience and graduate schemes.” Graham Campbell has worked with the University of Salford before: he previously delivered a series of social media masterclasses to students with entrepreneurial aspirations.
