Royal wedding boost for licensed trade

Pubs and other venues in Lancashire could receive a boost to trade thanks to an extension to licensing hours for the upcoming Royal Wedding.

It has been confirmed by the Government that relevant venues will benefit from an extra two hours to provide ‘licensable activities’ on Friday, May 18 and Saturday, May 19 from 11pm, to 1am the next day.

This is thanks to the Licensing Act 2003 (Royal Wedding Licensing Hours) Order 2018, but premises that do not benefit from this order can apply for a late temporary event notice.

The extension of hours relates to the sale of alcohol (‘on sales’ only) and regulated entertainment as long as there is a current premises licence in place allowing these activities until 11pm.

The hours for late-night refreshment can also be extended as long as there is a current premises licence in place allowing for the provision of late night refreshment and sales of alcohol for consumption on the premises.

It does not include premises such as supermarkets, off-licenses or takeaways.

Samantha Faud, solicitor in the Leisure & Licensing team at regional law firm Napthens, said: “The British Beer and Pub Association has estimated that the extension could result in a £10m boost to the economy, so it’s welcome news that the Government has confirmed it will go ahead.

“We know there are many people planning to enjoy the Royal Wedding with celebrations of their own, and the chance for relevant venues to remain open for an additional two hours each of the two days could result in a worthwhile boost in trade.

“It’s worth noting that the extensions are expected to coincide with the FA Cup Final, due to be played on Saturday, May 19. “Those venues wishing to benefit from longer trading hours that cannot use the Order should look at applying for a late temporary event notice urgently as there is not much time left to do this.”
