MP backs refillable packaging campaign

Nigel Evans, the MP representing the Ribble Valley, hosted a reception at the House of Commons to discuss a circular packaging solution that aims to further reduce carbon emissions and drive sustainable investment in the UK.

The reception was attended by MPs, including the parliamentary under secretary of state (business and trade) Kevin Hollinrake MP, as well as representatives from industry, such as AB InBev (Budweiser Brewing Group UK&I), Britvic, Molson Coors and Coca-Cola Europacific Partners plc.

The Consider Refillable campaign proposes retail businesses move towards using refillable glass bottles instead of one-way bottles. In the UK consumers use approximately five billion one-way drinks bottles each year.

A move towards refillable bottles could see 85 per cent less emissions than single use glass, and 57 per cent and 70 per cent less than single use plastic and aluminium respectively (Source: Zero Waste Europe). This could also potentially save consumers as much as 15-20 per cent of their costs.

Refillable glass bottles are a method already used in various countries such as Germany, Netherlands, and Belgium.

I was particularly pleased to be able to host this event as a forum for discussion on an industry led solution which is what we need to see more of in order to tackle this crucial issue.”
