Luxury North Wales caravan park wins planning consent

Lancaster-based Harrison Pitt Architects has helped secure planning permission for a new five-star standard caravan park to be built at the foot of Snowdon in North Wales.

The Lancaster-based practice has been chosen by Morris Leisure, the touring caravan and luxury holiday home park operator, to design the facility near Llanberis in Snowdonia National Park.

The site will have capacity for 54 touring caravans and associated developments, including reception, toilet and amenity blocks, warden compounds, internal roads, footpaths and landscaping.

Work is due to start on site in April 2015 and the project is targeting a completion date of Easter 2016.

Richard Wooldridge, architect at Harrison Pitt Architects, said: “Through our longstanding work with the Caravan Club we’ve developed specific expertise in the caravan and holiday parks sector. This is the fifth project we’ve worked on with Morris Leisure and we’re pleased to be involved in such a prestigious scheme in one of the most scenic areas of the UK, and on a site with such a colourful history.”

The development site lies within the Glyn Rhonwy complex in an area of land adjacent to Llyn Tomos Lewis. The land was formerly used as offices and storage space by the former Central Electricity Generating Board (CEGB) during the development of the Dinorwig Power Station in the early 1980s.

The site was used as a slate quarry from the late 18th century until 1930 and was also used as an Air Ministry bomb store during the Second World War.

Edward Goddard, a director of Morris Leisure, said: “We’ve spared no expense in ensuring that our touring parks set the highest standards for our visiting touring caravanners, motorhome and RV owners and campers. This latest development in Llanberis will provide our customers with unrivalled facilities in the adventure playground that is Snowdonia National Park. It will be yet another string in the bow for the region’s visitor economy.”

Morris Leisure already owns and operates five touring caravan and holiday home parks located in the Shropshire countryside and Snowdonia National Park. Llanberis is a national tourist destination with a number of important tourist attractions located locally, including the Snowdon Mountain Railway, Llanberis Lake Railway, Electric Mountain, Dinorwig Power Station and the Welsh National Slate Museum.
