Medical students from the University of Central Lancashire will soon be offered the opportunity of medical placements at Preston-based Greater Lancashire Hospital.

Housed in Preston’s Millennium City Park, the hospital's services currently include neurology, neurophysiology, cardiology, urology, dermatology, gynaecology and women’s health, radiology and vascular medicine.

Other areas of out-patient expertise include ear, nose and throat, plastic surgery, pain management, eye surgery and respiratory medicine. It also possesses an MRI Department complete with comprehensive ultrasound facility.

Prof Alison Carr, dean of the University of Central Lancashire’s school of medicine and dentistry, said: “Securing a placement provider close to the city of Preston for our Bachelor of medicine, Bachelor of surgery (MBBS) students is an exciting development for the university.

“Our students are the next generation of NHS staff so it’ll be extremely valuable for them to work alongside experienced consultants who are specialists in their respective fields of medicine.

"Working in a privately run hospital which conducts NHS work alongside its private provision will also be a valuable experience for our students.”

Founded by clinicians Gwam and Sara Rajiah in 2014, Greater Lancashire Hospital has recently been listed on the NHS’s Patient Choice Framework, which enables GPs and their NHS patients to book the most convenient appointments for their requirements.

Both modern and purpose-built, it remains the only hospital in the region to be classed ‘outstanding’ for patient care by the Care Quality Commission (CQC).

Gwam Rajiah, executive chairman of Greater Lancashire Hospital, said: “We are a local hospital that's run by local people for the benefit of the entire North West community.

"We recognise just how beneficial it is for the next generation of doctors and surgeons to have the chance to work alongside highly experienced consultants and clinicians while also learning first-hand how a purpose-built day case surgical and treatment centre is run.

"We're delighted to be showcasing our outstanding patient care through this new partnership with the University of Central Lancashire and greatly look forward to welcoming the students later this year."
