From Bold Blooms to Business Growth: What the flowers flourish with academy support

When friends Gemma Buntain and Natale McDonald opened What The Flowers in Blackpool in September 2024, their vision was to make a bold statement and deliver a unique floral experience.

With over four decades of combined experience, Gemma in funeral tributes and Natale in weddings and creative displays, their vision was to elevate floristry into an artistic experience.

Their unique shop is far from a traditional florist. Bright, statement bouquets using rare tropical blooms, neon-coloured painted leaves, and handmade ‘floofs’ are meticulously packaged in black wraps making the brand as much about visual theatre as floral design.

Additionally selling unique ornaments and oversized reed diffusers adds to the uniqueness of the business

As the business gained momentum, it became clear that creativity alone wouldn’t sustain long-term growth.

Following a move to larger premises in June 2025, Gemma and Natale engaged with the Blackpool Growth Business Academy.

Initial support came through one-to-one coaching with Growth Specialist Nicola Pickup, focusing on the practicalities of managing staff and the financial realities of running a business.

Additionally, Gemma attended some of the Academy workshops which added to her confidence, reminding her that entrepreneurial growth requires personal development as well.

The collaboration deepened with the expertise of Academy’s expert John Townsend, helping them focus on more strategic steps and a personalised growth action plan.

Together, they refined forecasting, defined milestones, and aligned their creativity with commercial strategy.

The partnership has delivered tangible benefits, the expert guidance boosted Gemma and Natale’s confidence in business decisions and reinforced their belief in their path forward.

Now approaching their first anniversary, What The Flowers is continuing to work with the Academy as they continue to grow and explore franchising.

Gemma said: “We’d 100 per cent recommend the Academy. It’s an amazing resource. We’re good at floristry, but the Academy has helped us grow as business owners.

"I know that we still have a lot to learn and it’s reassuring to know that we can reach out to the Academy for any support we need.

The Blackpool Growth Business Academy are encouraging Blackpool businesses to get in touch to access fully funded, tailored support.
