The University of Lancashire has unveiled a new installation at the heart of its Preston campus, celebrating the institution’s transition from the University of Central Lancashire to its new name.

Visible as visitors walk towards the university’s Student Centre, the installation, which is 2,000mm high, 3,700mm wide and 200mm deep, features a bespoke tile created by Alusid, the university’s original spin-out company which specialises in the design and production of high-performance tiles made from recycled materials.

Ruth Connor, University of Lancashire deputy vice-chancellor, said: “Our new installation celebrates our new name and reflects the University’s dedication to environmental responsibility as well as our commitment to progress, innovation, and community. Collaborating with Alusid has been instrumental in bringing this vision to life.

“Alusid tiles are produced from recycled materials and not only enhance the aesthetic appeal of the installation but also demonstrate the potential of academic research being translated into real-world applications.”

The project brought together a range of partners including Lancashire-based companies Hardscape and Aquajet, alongside Integrity, a design company from Kent, and DMA Signs, from Surrey.

Dr Alasdair Bremner, Alusid chief executive and university alumnus, added: “I’m proud to see our locally made sustainable materials featured so prominently on the University of Lancashire’s Preston campus.

"This collaboration is a powerful example of how academic innovation can drive positive change delivering real benefits for the environment, local industry, and the university community.”

Alusid, the University of Lancashire’s first spin-out company formed in 2015, specialises in the design and production of high-performance tiles made from recycled materials.

The company has previously worked with companies such as Selfridges and Starbucks and has recently begun a 10-year partnership with Topps Tiles with two ranges already released in stores across the country.

Tony Attard, Alusid chair of the board and honorary fellow of the university, said: “It’s especially fitting that this installation has been made using recycled materials and has been produced right here in Preston. It reflects the strength of innovation within our city, showcasing how homegrown talent and sustainable enterprise can shape a brighter future for both the university and the wider community.”

Ruth Connor added: “The new installation and signage will serve as a visible reminder of the university’s evolving identity, its roots in the Lancashire region, and its vision for continued innovation and excellence.

"Our name is new, but the commitment is not and we’re still the same forward-thinking, inspiring and committed university and proud of our civic role within Lancashire.”
