Thwaites Brewery - Over 200 years of history

It is over two centuries since Daniel Thwaites set out from the Lake District to make a new life for himself away from the family farm. Daniel built up his brewery choosing Blackburn as its location, and six generations later his family continue the adventure. Daniel Thwaites PLC is still striving for brewing perfection, and now boasts a growing collection of pubs, inns, hotels and spas.

In September 2018 the company started brewing on its new site at Mellor Brook, having moved from the original brewery in central Blackburn. The company remains family-run, and it shows in every detail, remaining steadfast and faithful to Daniel’s principles. As well as a range of great craft ales, Daniel Thwaites has a variety of gorgeous inns and hotels spread across the country, from the Lake District to Fareham in Southampton. Independent and full of character, The House of Daniel Thwaites is proud to continue the journey that Daniel started, always looking for new ways to create lasting memories for customers and guests.

And the three magnificent shire horses, based in the stables at Mellor Brook, are an important part of the family at Daniel Thwaites. Many years ago they carted Thwaites’ beer to an array of customers around Blackburn. Today, however, there are faster ways to deliver ale, but the shire horses remain at the heart of Daniel Thwaites’ heritage, making star appearances at the hotels and inns up and down the country.

We want to tell our story and over the coming months we will be arranging a networking event and tours of Head Office for those businesses who have expressed an interest in meeting with us and taking a look around.  If you would like to receive details please contact Sharon Brook - Head of Sales by emailing [email protected].
