December in PR can be pure chaos. Parties, lunches, awards nights, client events, and somehow they all land at once. You’re expected to be professional, sparkling, and coherent while inhaling canapés like it’s a competitive sport.
And honestly? I love it. Part of the job. The buzz, the energy, the human connection - it’s what makes this career brilliant. But if you don’t have a few survival strategies, it can get overwhelming fast. Here’s my own list of tried and tested techniques to keep a lid on the Christmas crazy.
Face-to-Face is gold
Most of the year, many clients live behind screens. Emails, calls, Teams meetings - it’s easy, they do the job, but real connection happens in person.
During Sparkle Season, people suddenly want a piece of the action and show up in real life, often for the first time. You get handshakes (and hugs if you’re not quick enough), eye contact, laughter over a slightly burnt canapé and comparing of sequins. These are the moments that build trust and relationships that last.
Enjoy the champagne, but keep your limits
Yes, the bar will be free, and yes, it’s tempting to relax completely. But it’s still work. I’ve seen plenty of people overdo it, and suddenly networking turns into damage control, which to be frank is the last thing I need after a few late nights. Toast, enjoy yourself, soak up the energy, but remember, reputation is everything. That’s not to say I won’t be letting loose at a few events – but you pick them wisely.
Quiet moments are your secret weapon
Even with parties and awards, work doesn’t stop. Deadlines don’t pause because of fairy lights. Desk days and quiet blocks of time are essential to breathe, catch up, and focus. Without them, the month becomes a blur and you end up reactive instead of in control. Clients can have the luxury of slowing down on sign offs and info sharing. Us consultants? Not so much.
Tick off your own to-dos while clients slow down
And on that note, this is the perfect time to pick up all that “stuff”. Update databases, tackle admin, sort tax stuff, or prep LinkedIn content. Doing it now makes January feel far less stressful and gives you breathing space for the chaos that’s inevitable later in the month.
Prep now, hit January running
It’s tempting to focus only on getting through December, but taking time to organise your comms activity for 2026 is a game-changer. Update media lists, draft content ideas, refine outreach plans — even a little prep now means you start the year in control instead of scrambling.
While everyone’s in festive mode, schedule your one-to-ones, new business chats, and planning meetings. Diaries fill up fast, and getting ahead now gives you momentum for the new year. For me personally, there is no “easing back in to it”. I’d much rather start with a bang and as I mean to go on for the year.
Front-load tasks before chaos hits
The one piece of advice I always give start-ups is this: how your diary looks on a Monday is absolutely not how your week will pan out. Seriously. Kids get ill, plans change, clients reschedule – and add in to that it’s December and things rarely go to plan. Start the week with office days and focus tasks, get it in the bag and then you have more control. Toploading gives you a buffer and keeps you one step ahead.
Keep work and home separate
In our hybrid culture, it’s tempting to wrap presents between calls or fold laundry at lunch, making the most of every second. But this usually means doing a botched job at both. Give each side your full attention and everything gets done better and faster. If you can get out in to a co-working space, even better.
Routine is your secret weapon
December can be indulgent, but for me my gym training, sleep and nutrition are my non-negotiables. Slack here and everything falls apart, and fast. Sticking to routines gives energy, focus, and resilience. It also means enjoying parties without turning into a zombie halfway through.
Know Your Limits
Everyone’s got limits - kids, pets. elderly parents, ADHD traits, perimenopause, exhaustion. Sparkle Season is fun but draining. Knowing when to step back is just as important as leaning in.
Not every invite needs a yes
It’s tempting to go all in. But before you stack out your outlook, have a really good think about what is going to actually be beneficial. That one-to-one that’s really a soft pitch? Make it a Teams call instead of a two-hour round trip. Drinks stacked back-to-back? Be realistic. None of us are eighteen anymore. Saying no protects your energy for what actually matters.
Schedule now, be present later
Social media doesn’t stop for December. Prepping LinkedIn posts and marketing content in advance saves stress and lets you fully enjoy events. You might want to whittle down to a few posts a week, but don’t go missing entirely.
And on this “a quiet news week” really is still a thing. Your friends in the media are just as knackered as everyone else, so a few well-written articles will help make their lives easier.
Enjoy the Season
Despite the chaos, Sparkle Season is what makes PR magical. The energy, the connections, the celebrations - exhausting and exhilarating at the same time. Lean in, be present, make memories, and in January, finally sleep.
