North Lancs Training Group (NLTG), the Accrington-based training provider, recently teamed up with The PROSPECTS Foundation to work on their Hyndburn TreeACTION project.

Tutors and staff from NLTG’s Adult Learning Team joined members of the PROSPECTS Foundation and the Hyndburn community, to help plant 120 buckthorn plants at the top of Pleck Meadow to attract the Brimstone butterfly back into the habitat.  They also helped to plant approximately 100 hawthorn plants at Arden Hall, which will help the environmental impact of the area.

The TreeACTION project is part of a local climate emergency action programme, which has seen the Prospects Foundation and Hyndburn Borough Council plan a programme to engage local people in planting trees and regenerating existing woodlands in Hyndburn.

At least 15,000 trees are being planted as part of the project, while talks, events and training sessions are also taking place to help local people learn more about the causes of climate change.

At NLTG, employees are allowed two days per year to volunteer on programmes like the TreeACTION project, which is part of the training provider’s wider wellbeing initiative.

Alongside the planting, the NLTG team enjoyed lunch and were guided around the Coppice to take a closer look at the landscape and how the work being achieved by the TreeACTION project will ensure that the environment is passed on safely to future generations.

Carl Morris, adult learning team manager at NLTG, said: “We had a great day with the PROSPECTS Foundation team and it was really rewarding for us as a team to work on what is a wonderful community initiative.

“Here at NLTG we are passionate about volunteering and helping others, and this was the perfect chance to do so; we are looking forward to getting involved again in the future.”

More information about the opportunities available at NLTG, including courses for Lancashire job seekers aged 19+, can be found on their website: www.nltg.co.uk
