Chorley resident Michael Hadfield, Senior Innovation and Growth Specialist at Innovate UK, has transformed his professional development through 3D 360’s Advanced Manufacturing Skills Bootcamps.
By building skills in 3D printing, CAD and digital tools, he has been able to move from curiosity to authority, helping businesses across the North West understand and thrive using Industry 4.0 and its various technologies.
“The course was the spark that started the fire. It gave me confidence to discuss Industry 4.0 with companies one-on-one, in boardrooms and at public events,” Mick explained.
WHY AN INNOVATE UK SPECIALIST TURNED TO 3D 360's SKILLS BOOTCAMPS
Innovate UK is the UK’s national innovation agency, part of UK Research and Innovation, and plays a key role in helping businesses turn ideas into commercial success.
In his role, Mick advises manufacturers on how to adopt and scale new technologies, from 3D printing/additive manufacturing to AI. To provide credible, practical guidance, he recognised the need to sharpen his own skills through structured, hands-on training.
“The nature of my role means I need to keep my skills current. The Bootcamps offered exactly the blend of practical training and technical depth I was looking for,” he said.
HANDS-ON TRAINING THAT DELIVERS
Mick describes the programme as one of the best courses he has taken in years. The experience covered building a 3D printer, learning 3D CAD and slicing, and exploring AI and big data. While some modules seemed less relevant at first, they quickly proved essential to his daily work.
“Hands-on learning shows that Industry 4.0 isn’t just for young people, it equips decision makers of all ages to engage with new technologies. The training demystifies 3D printing and AI for executives, bridging generational gaps and supporting ROI-focused decision making.”
TANGIBLE RESULTS ACROSS THE NORTHWEST
Since completing the Bootcamps, Mick has shared his insights at Chorley Council, presented to over 70 delegates at Manchester Metropolitan University and Greater Manchester colleges, and continues to advise SMEs across the region. His ability to explain Industry 4.0 with confidence has opened up conversations that move organisations from curiosity to action.
He also highlights the value of impartial guidance, noting that 3D 360’s independence makes its training a trusted starting point for businesses. “Because 3D 360 does not sell printers or commercial services, their guidance is completely neutral and that makes a huge difference to companies looking for reliable advice,” he said.
LOOKING AHEAD
Mick is already applying his new knowledge in security and defence contexts and sees growing opportunities in digital twin software and AR guided maintenance.
He also champions 3D CAD as the essential entry point for any additive manufacturing workflow.
By embedding these skills into his day-to-day conversations with SMEs, he is helping manufacturers diversify, improve efficiency and adopt new technologies with confidence.
