Hollywood filmmaker's masterclass in Lancaster

A Hollywood producer has visited Lancashire to mentor a new generation of aspiring filmmakers.

Carlos GallardoCarlos Gallardo is the Mexican producer behind Hollywood hits El Mariachi, Desperado and Once Upon a Time in Mexico. He has worked with stars such as Johnny Depp, Antonio Banderas and Salma Hayek.

Carlos took part in five film making masterclasses across the UK, including one held recently in Lancaster.

The masterclasses were designed to equip filmmakers with the knowledge to launch, produce and distribute their own successful feature film, and covered screenwriting, raising finance, casting, production and post-production skills.

Filmmakers also had the opportunity to ask questions about their own ! feature project and receive feedback from Carlos.

Carlos said: "I was honoured to be a part of the masterclasses and have the chance to meet and inspire so many new filmmakers on the quest for their dreams. Everyone seemed so passionate and engaged which was great to see and I look forward to coming back to the UK."

As well as Lancaster, similar sessions were held in Manchester, Glasgow, Newcastle and London.

The masterclasses also included Chee Keong Cheung - a writer, director and producer from Lancaster-based Intense Productions, and Mark Strange - an actor, stunt co-ordinator and producer.

It was Chee Keong Cheung's initiative that brought Carlos to the UK. The sessions were organised by Chee's Lancaster-based company Intense Productions, in association with UK Trade and Investment North West.

He said: "People attending the masterclasses had the opportunity to gain industry know-how and the chance to network wit! h some of the industry’s most innovative and skilful talent.

"The masterclasses were incredibly successful and I was really pleased with the strong feedback from the film makers and creatives in attendance, which included writers, directors, producers, actors, editors, composers and film students. "I’m grateful to UK Trade and Investment NW and NE for helping to support the masterclasses along with Creative Lancashire. Due to the level of interest and demand we're hoping to arrange more masterclasses later in the year."
