Hitting the heights
Winner: Property Business Award
Designing what will be Preston’s tallest residential development and a ‘gamechanger’ for the city is just one of the ways David Cox Architects is hitting the heights. The Preston-based practice is involved in stand-out building projects in its home city and across the North West.
It has invested strongly in technology, puts faith in its committed team members and is active in the community as a founder of Preston Partnership.
And it was that approach and philosophy that impressed the judges of the Property Business category in this year’s Red Rose Awards.
David Cox Architects has a proud Preston history. It was founded there in the 1930s and has been based in the city centre since 1945.
Over the decades it has undergone several name-changes but throughout its various stages of development it has remained totally committed to quality design.
Today its design skills harness the latest developments in the field of architecture, combined with a commercial awareness that meets the needs both of the client and of the wider community.
Its work ranges from sensitive projects on listed buildings, to modern and innovative architectural solutions, such as the planned £26m, 21-storey Lofthaus development.
We are proud to be a Lancashire-based business
Given the green light by planners, the 299-apartment development will also be the Preston’s second tallest structure overall behind the iconic city landmark St Walburge’s church.
Director David Cox, who took over sole control of the practice that now bears his name in 2009, adopts a hands-on approach and oversees every project.
His impressive CV includes time spent in Germany, where he became co-owner of a multidisciplinary practice working on commercial and residential projects and several masterplans for Berlin and Brandenburg.
He now leads a nine-strong team of architects and technicians, with the capabilities to work on a wide variety of residential, commercial, leisure and conservation projects.
David says: “We are proud to be a Lancashire-based business, with most of our work in and around the county and we’ve been involved in some major schemes here in our home city and across the area.”
He is keen to assist in the promotion of Preston both regionally and nationally and says: “We’re seeing a growing interest in Preston from investors and professionals who see the opportunities that exist here and that is great to see.”
He adds: “Everything we do is client-focused and we are committed to excellence in design and service delivery.
“We believe that good design has a strong economic value. This informs our work from each project’s inception and we will ensure that each site achieves its maximum potential.”
The RIBA Chartered Practice has received several civic trust, conservation and mayoral awards. And now it is a proud Red Rose winner.
David says: “Winning the Property Business award has been a real morale-booster for the team. They are delighted. We see it as proof that we are up there with the main practices in the region and can compete with anyone.”
