The Bank Holiday weekend proved to be a Super Sunday for Accrington Stanley Women FC as they played a historic match in front of a record crowd at the Wham Stadium, against international side Isle of Man National Women's Team.

The match was a real spectacle for spectators and a special day for the teams, as they played in the outstanding facilities at the Wham Stadium. Proceedings began with the younger age Accrington Stanley Women teams parading past the incredible crowd of 1,139 keen supporters.

The teams then formed a guard of honour and the Lone Piper from the Accrington Pipe Band, Danielle Haworth led the teams and officials out onto the pitch. There was also a female referee, up-and-coming official Chelsea Hodgson.

The action started right from the whistle with the IoM scoring after just four minutes, from their number 7 Erin Sells. Action did not let up with ASWFC's Sadie Mitchell scoring an incredible equaliser long range shot into the top corner after 36 minutes. In the second half both sides hit the crossbar, with the match eventually ending full time at 1-1.

Head coach Bryn Tracey was absolutely delighted with the record crowd, and the performance on the day. He said: "It was such an emotive day, and one that will be remembered for a very long time. It's had a massive impact on the whole town, and the future is very much bright for ASWFC.

"A lot of people put a lot of hard work into making this happen, and I thank all of them for their part. The players handled themselves with class from start to finish. It's difficult going into an arena like that, when you're not used to it. They took it all in their stride, and made everyone proud. It was a great testament to their abilities and attitude. Here's to the next one!"

Isle Of Man National Women's Team manager Wayne Lisy added: "We made history today. It could have gone either way, it's been a fantastic day. We really appreciate the invite over here, and we're more than happy to reciprocate if Accrington Stanley Women want to come to the Isle of Man - we'd be more than happy to host!"

Accrington Stanley Women are sponsored by Sundown Solutions. They are actively looking for more volunteers and committee members. If you'd like to sponsor a match, please email [email protected]
