FWP Ltd partner Kate Shuttleworth is celebrating 25 years of successful project delivery with the leading architecture, design and masterplanning practice.

During her quarter of a century career at the award-winning Preston headquartered firm she has acted as cost and project manager on a host of high-profile development schemes across the UK.

Many of those schemes have involved working in sensitive conservation areas, with heritage and listed building renovation works requiring a variety of grant funding applications and close cost and project management.

She is currently working on the renovation of the grade one listed Rochdale Town Hall, which has seen FWP acting as quantity surveyor and cost manager throughout the complex project.

Kate led the FWP team that worked on the award-winning transformation of the medieval Fratry at Carlisle Cathedral – another complex project on a sensitive site.

She has also helped to develop and grow FWP's nationally acknowledged expertise in the racecourse sector, cost and project managing developments at courses including Haydock, Doncaster, York and Chester.

Kate played a major part in the delivery of the award-winning Gloucester Motorway Services development for Cumbrian firm Westmorland, owners of Tebay Services on the M6.

The design and delivery of the services on the M5 was overseen by FWP as project and cost managers, with both north and southbound services opening on time and to the £40m budget. It went on to win an RICS Project of the Year award.

Kate is a fully qualified Chartered Quantity Surveyor and has worked in the construction industry for more than 30 years, both in the public and private sector.  She became a partner at FWP in 2008 after being promoted to associate in 2005.

During her 25 years at FWP, which also has offices in Manchester and London, she has played a part in several school developments and high-end residential projects, including a home in Penwortham that won a Grand Designs award.

Kate, who was presented with a gift by FWP managing director David Robinson, to mark her career milestone, said: “I’ve enjoyed every minute of my time at FWP and it seems like only yesterday that I started work here.

“It’s been great to have worked on projects in so many diverse areas, from sensitive and complex conservation sites such as Carlisle Cathedral to the building of modern state-of-the-art sporting facilities, such as the £32m grandstand at Doncaster racecourse.

“Each project we work on is different and comes with its own particular challenges that have to be overcome. That problem solving is what makes the work we do so interesting. It is also very much a team effort.”

David Robinson, managing director at FWP, said: “I have worked with Kate for over 30 years and first met her before she joined us.

“She has been a fantastic asset to the practice, working on many of our high-profile projects particularly in horse racing.

“Her first scheme was at Haydock back in 1998, and she has worked on projects at Doncaster, Chester and York in the period since. It’s great she’s celebrating 25 years with FWP.”

FWP is well-known for its sports stadia and healthcare design work, though its portfolio is much wider and ranges from heritage projects to leisure developments.
