Mentoring launch for Lancaster district

A new business mentoring programme for the Lancaster district officially launched on Monday 26 January.

The initiative is delivered in partnership by Lancaster City Council, Scale‑Ability, and the Lancaster and Morecambe Chamber of Commerce, and is funded through the UK Shared Prosperity Fund as part of ongoing investment in local business growth and skills development.

The launch event provided the first opportunity for mentors who are experienced business owners and professionals to meet their matched mentees.

Participants explored mentee goals, the types of support mentors can offer, and how progress will be tracked throughout the programme.

Rosebank PR and Communications owner Bob Hart said: "This partnership between the Chamber and the city council is a really positive step, helping to support new businesses and entrepreneurship in our district.

"Setting up on your own company is rewarding but can also bring plenty of challenges and surprises.

"I would never have got my own business off the ground without the support of various people who offered free advice and guidance in the early days - I'm very pleased to now have this opportunity to offer similar support to a new business through this programme.

"The training and support we have received as mentors has been extremely useful and will help us to bring structured and focused support to this first group of mentees."

Debra Presley, founder of Diverse Nation and mentee on the programme, said: "Launching a business is exciting but full of unknowns, so being part of a programme that’s so rooted in the local business community already feels like a huge boost. The energy in the room was brilliant, and having experienced local founders backing you makes it feel like anything’s possible."

Graham, chief executive of the Lancaster and Morecambe Chamber of Commerce said: “Supporting the growth of local businesses is at the heart of what we do, and this mentoring programme is a powerful example of how collaboration can make a real difference.

"Bringing mentors and mentees together at the very start sets the tone for honest conversations, shared ambition, and practical support.

"We’re proud to work alongside Lancaster City Council and Scale‑Ability to help new founders build confidence, capability, and long‑term success.”

The mentoring programme aims to equip new founders with the confidence, insight, and networks needed to navigate the early stages of business growth.

By pairing emerging entrepreneurs with seasoned local professionals, the initiative supports sustainable development and contributes to a thriving local economy. Mentoring sessions will now begin, with ongoing support and development opportunities scheduled throughout the year.
