Employers to control illegal immigration?

The government announced recently its intention to clampdown on illegal workers with fines of up to £20,000 per illegal person employed.

The government’s self-evident intention is to help reduce illegal immigration. It already has the facility to impose the fines and is actively doing so.

Of course, unless you intend to, or already, employ illegal workers the risk of a fine will not affect you directly. But you could inadvertently employ someone illegally and be vulnerable to a fine. The answer is to always check the status of everyone you employ.

You are not expected to become an immigration officer but you must exercise diligence.
