Nelson Town Council has pulled out all the stops to celebrate the King’s Coronation on Saturday 6th May 2023 with the biggest event in East Lancashire including a spectacular procession, live music, a big screen showing the Coronation live, competitions, entertainment for all the family and much more. Local residents and those further afield are all invited to mark the momentous occasion together as a community from 10:00am-3:00pm.

The activities for the day are all in place and can now be revealed. The highlight of the day is of course the live stream of the coronation of King Charles III, being shown on a giant screen by the Shuttle. The day starts with the Town Cryer at 10am, followed by a procession led by the world famous Accrington Pipe Band leaving from Nelson Library and ending at the Shuttle.

Following the Coronation, the day continues with a fantastic stage show hosted by BBC Radio Lancashire’s Hussnain Hanif. The winner of the children’s Design A Crown competition will be judged by the Mayor at 12pm, with the winner receiving a trip to London worth £400!

Other acts on stage include local acoustic band OdAll, The Take That Experience, a fabulous Bollywood style dance show by Desi Nach, and finishing with Hussnain Hanif performing with his very impressive Nasheed Choir.

Throughout the day from 10-3, there are a large number of completely FREE activities to entertain all the family. These include four fairground rides, Henna artist, face painting, a crown making workshop, roaming street artists, a throne and backdrop for selfies, and an appearance by Nelson Fire Station with a fire truck.

Other delights on offer include various food stalls including Mama Shar’s Caribbean Food, High Tea will be available, ice cream from Slater’s Ices, traditional Hook a Duck and a stall with caricature artist Okinyemi Oludele.

There is a specially designated grass picnic area where you can bring your own food around the famous Shuttle, or eat locally from one of the many local eateries, hostelries and food providers, to encourage visitors to #ShopLocal whilst watching the ceremony.

In the build up to the big day over 5,000 local primary school and nursery children have also been given, courtesy of Nelson Town Council, a fantastic ‘King’s Coronation Memorabilia Box’ to take home, including a souvenir bookmark, specially produced metal souvenir badge as well as a picture and biography of King Charles III.

Councillor Faraz Ahmad, Chairman of the Events Committee at Nelson Town Council, said: “The coronation of a new monarch is something that many of us have never seen and everyone at Nelson Town Council is determined to mark this special occasion in style.

“After many weeks of planning we are thrilled to be able to announce our plans to the public and we would like to officially invite you all to Nelson for what is going to be a day to remember and a really tremendous coronation event here in Nelson.”
