Construction work is under way on a new extra care development for over 55s located at the former print works site off West Paddock in Leyland.

Jubilee Gardens will include 75 one- and two-bedroom apartments and will help support independent living for older residents by offering on-site support and facilities such as a café and hair salon.

Caddick Construction, the main contractor, has now started work on the foundations and a 60ft crane has been installed to start the initial build phase.

Coun Paul Foster, leader of South Ribble Borough Council, said: "I am pleased that Jubilee Gardens has now started the build phase. This is a unique scheme for South Ribble and provides a much-needed housing solution for our ageing population.

"We are out of the ground now and making great progress with the scheme, it promises to be cutting edge and the best in the region, so keep an eye on the website for more updates."

Jubilee Gardens has been designed to allow individuals to stay in their own homes for longer. It will work to foster a vibrant community space where residents can socialise, take part in activities and engage with each other.

Landscaped gardens, recreational areas, and communal lounges will also contribute to a sense of community.

Caddick Construction has also pledged £6.6m of social value investment to create a legacy through a number of initiatives to support the community. These include a series of work placements, employment opportunities and vocational training for local people.

Paul Dodsworth, Caddick Construction Group’s managing director, added: “Being entrusted to build a new development, especially one that will serve the community, is an opportunity to leave a lasting legacy.

"With construction now underway, we are focussed on delivering an incredible extra care scheme for South Ribble that will benefit local people for years to come.”

The building work will also support local good causes, the constructor has also pledged to dedicate staff hours to volunteering with local charities and will donate £5,000 to community projects.

Jubilee Gardens is part funded via Homes England, through the Ministry of Housing, Communities & Local Government.
