Burnley’s Woodland Spa earns top title at World Luxury Spa Awards

The Woodland Spa has collected the global winner award at the World Luxury Spa Awards at the Harbour Grand Hotel in Hong Kong.

Woodland Spa Hong KongThe news of the win broke earlier in the summer, but last week Oliver Brown, director of Crow Wood Leisure, the parent company of The Woodland Spa, attended the glitzy event to pick up the award.

The Burnley-based Spa had been nominated in the World’s Best Emerging Luxury Spa category, which it won. Then a global winner was chosen from 22 categories and The Woodland Spa came out on top.

Commenting on the award, Crow Wood leisure director Oliver Brown, said: “It was an amazing trip to Hong Kong to collect our award and a spectacular event. We’re extremely proud to have won the award and to tell the world that here in Burnley we have a destination that offers quality and sophistication.

“We are delighted to have challenged outdated stereotypes about Burnley and the North generally. Cobbled streets and mill chimneys may be our heritage, but we are seeing off competition from established luxury spa destinations from as far afield as Sri Lanka, the United Arab Emirates, the Seychelles, Mauritius and Australia.

“The Woodland Spa represented a big investment and a big risk, but we felt that we had the location, the staff and the experience to make it happen. In under two years, we’re approaching our 100,000th customer and The Woodland Spa is being recognised nationally and internationally.”

The criteria applied by the World Luxury Spa Awards to assist nominating parties and industry experts during the voting process include conformance to 5 star requirements; conformance to specification; 5 star amenities, surroundings and service; and qualified, committed and experienced staff.

The latest accolade for the Burnley-based business constitutes a highly prestigious hat-trick, as the spa - which has only been operational for two years - won last year’s UK Day Spa of the Year award at the prestigious Professional Beauty Awards 2014, held in London; and also scooped Best Spa in the North of England at the Good Spa Guide Awards.

Marna Lourens, executive manager of the World Luxury Spa Awards, said: “It is with great pleasure that we can celebrate a highly successful 2015 World Luxury Spa Awards’ and we congratulate our overall Global Winner, The Woodland Spa from Burnley in the UK. As a luxury emerging spa amongst the world’s best, this is a truly remarkable achievement and we believe that the business will prosper and grow.” Since the £4.5m investment in The Woodland Spa in 2013, Crow Wood has doubled its number of staff to 160, the business’ catering arm serves 7,500 covers per month and the business will exceed sales of £5.6m of in 2014/15.
