Haffners’ popular meat and potato pie won a Bronze Award at the British Pie Awards.
It’s quite the accolade for new owners Ted and Dean Cockett, who took over the business just eight months ago.
The Haffners’ meat and potato was one of some 900 pies to make their way to Melton Mowbray at the beginning of March as butchers country-wide sought to win the coveted pie championship.
Ted Cockett, managing director, said: “We thought ‘why not give it a go’, not really expecting to place in our first competition, but we did and we’re ecstatic! We scored really high on our pastry and were only 3 points off a silver, so next year we have gold in our sights.
“Haffners’ meat and potato pies are legendary in the town and it was important to us to keep the same recipe which the family business has thrived on for 130 years.
“We’ve also retained the staff who lovingly created these and our many other flavours six days a week. They are the experts and this award is for them.”
The British Pie Awards now in its 15th year brings in entries from across the country and from bakers, butchers, pubs, sports clubs, fish & chip shops amongst other pie makers judged by a team of 140 judges.
Dr Matthew O’Callaghan, chairman of the British Pie Awards, said: “I’m so pleased that Haffners Pies are among the award winners. The judges were very complimentary about the pie.”
You can get one of Haffners’ award-winning pies from its butchers in Keirby Walk or fresh from the bakery in Malborough Street, near to the Reel Cinema.
