Students from Blackburn College have had their artwork put on show to the public as part of a new exhibition named Footprint.

The exhibition was held at The Bureau, on Penny Street in Blackburn between 2nd March 2022 to the 10th March 2022.

Both Level 1 and Level 2 students studying on the Art and Design Diploma at Blackburn College which is accredited by the University of the Arts, London have had their creations put on display.

Level 1 students were tasked with creating work around the theme of identity. Students took photos of Blackburn and also of the area they live and from those photos, created both colour and black and white paintings.

Level 2 students explored designs around natural form which they turned into cubism pieces. They also created a piece on still life and another around the urban environment.

The students’ artwork was judged by college staff as well as staff from The Bureau. Several awards were presented to students by Blackburn College principal and chief executive Dr Fazal Dad and assistant principal (teaching and learning) Rachel Tarplee during the exhibition premiere.

Harram Fatima, 18, who was awarded first place from the Level 1 course said: “I’m excited but was nervous to be showcasing my work for the exhibition. I really enjoyed doing the work and learning new skills like blending colours and other techniques such as collage, which I had never done when I was at school in Norway. I’m particularly happy with my painting.

“My family were really looking forward to seeing my work on display as they haven’t really seen my work before. The tutors at Blackburn College are fantastic, they are very supportive and if there is anything I’m unsure about they help and explain it to me.”

Kae Beth, 18, who is also a Level 1 student and was awarded second place said: “I’m really pleased with the work that I have created. Everyone has done really well and we have been building up to the exhibition launch over the last few weeks.

“Sally and Rob our tutors have been brilliant with us, they are constantly helping us to improve, teaching us new techniques and pushing us out of our comfort zone such as with exhibitions like this. It was really nerve-wracking as you don’t know what people are going to think about your work, especially as this is my first exhibition but it’s reassuring and nice to see all of our work displayed together.”

Blackburn College principal and chief executive Dr Fazal Dad said: “Being able to view our students’ amazing artwork on display is a proud moment for our Art and Design students, staff and the college.”
