Award win for UCLan spin-out business

The University of Central Lancashire’s (UCLan) first spin-out business Alusid has won a prestigious award which celebrates excellence and innovation in the chemical, biochemical and process industries.

The company, which manufactures unique surface products using recycled materials, was named Best Start Up at the Institution of Chemical Engineers (IChemE) Global awards.

Alusid overcame competition from seven UK and international companies to scoop the accolade at the ceremony, which took place at The Palace Hotel in Manchester.

The business began from a research project between Professor David Binns and Dr Alasdair Bremner, to promote how designers can be more sustainable and environmentally responsible.

All products are made using at least 96 per cent recycled materials, including glass and ceramics, as an alternative to natural stone.

Professor David Binns, creative director at Alusid said: “To have won an award at such an esteemed industry ceremony is fantastic and we’d like to thank IChemE and the judging panel for recognising the dedication, commitment and hard work which has gone into establishing Alusid.

“This is a really exciting time for the team and we look forward to continuing promoting sustainability in the architecture and construction sectors.”

Jonathan Seville, president of IChemE, said: “These awards are important because they recognise future potential as well as past achievement. I’m confident that the winners will go on to achieve even bigger, better things and I wish them the very best.” IChemE is the global professional membership organisation for chemical engineering professionals and anyone involved with the process industries.
