Accent Language Solutions goes back to school

At Accent Language Solutions, inspiring the next generation of linguists is incredibly important to use which is why 21 years after leaving Runshaw College armed with her A-level results and an acceptance letter for Aberystwyth University, Accent Language Solutions managing director, Louise Bamford, recently returned to Runshaw College Modern Foreign Language Department to provide a presentation to their current cohort of budding linguists.

For many years, there has been a huge decline in the number of students choosing to study languages at degree level and this is having a huge impact on many industries including the translation industry so, when we were contacted by Nick Brownjohn, French course leader at Runshaw College, and asked to provide a presentation about careers in translation and interpreting, it was an offer we couldn’t refuse.

Greeted by a group of 15 students who are currently studying French, German and Spanish A-level courses at Runshaw, Louise provided an overview of the translation industry and outlined the advantages of a career in languages. Having been in their exact position 21 years ago with very little careers advice available, it was important to Louise to provide as much information as possible including information about the routes into translation, the advantages of continuing to learn languages, potential earnings and a short overview about the expected productivity of a translator on any given day.

The students listened carefully throughout the presentation and when given the opportunity for a Q&A session at the end of the session, they had clearly been inspired and asked great questions about the industry including how the industry is affected by different elements such as Brexit, Covid, the war in Ukraine and so much more.

It was great to come away from Runshaw College in the knowledge that these students now had enough information available to them to hopefully consider a career in translation but if that isn’t for them, we will hopefully have inspired them to continue with their language studies alongside another subject at degree level.
