1000km in 365 days to raise £1000 for Derian House

Rick Ashton, an employee of True Bearing Chartered Financial Planners has run an amazing 1000km during 2019, raising £1000 for Derian House Children’s Hospice. He has achieved his £1000 target through online fundraising and has completed a total of 100 separate runs, including 24 events such as the Chorley 10K and the Manchester Half Marathon.

Rick was inspired to begin the challenge because he wanted to have a more active lifestyle and do something he had never done before. He had seen the valuable work that Derian House do for terminally ill children through his employer (Derian House was True Bearings’ chosen charity for 2019). Rick also has two young children himself so it was an obvious choice!

"When I started the challenge, I had never run further than 5km in one go, and I worked out I needed to do 20km a week to complete the challenge," says Rick. "So, it wasn’t easy to go from that to running a lot every week. I’ve had to force myself to go out in really bad weather as well, anything from hail, to torrential rain! But Derian House is such a good cause and that’s what kept me going, that and family and friends."

Of his employer, Rick adds: "I am so grateful to the support that has been offered by True Bearing over the course of this challenge. They’ve helped me to promote my fundraising and kept me motivated along the way!"

Not content with completing the 1000km challenge this year, Rick has now signed up for the London Marathon in 2020 and will begin his training in January.

Rick completed the challenge in 121 hours, that’s just over 5 days-worth of running!  Rick has raised £1002 so far for the charity through his 1000km challenge 1000km is the same distance from Chorley to Oslo! Rick has completed the challenge over a total of 100 runs
