Accrington and Rossendale College has joined forces with Accrington Stanley Community Trust to deliver sports-based education courses.

The BTEC in Sport will be funded by the college thanks to government grants and will be delivered at Accrington Stanley Community Sports Hub. The qualification will be equivalent to three A-levels, combining an educational course with football.

Accrington Stanley Community Trust has been delivering BTEC courses for seven years alongside a provider outside the town.

But thanks to a six-figure commitment from Accrington and Rossendale College, the trust can now work alongside a neighbouring business.

Martin Fearon, manager of Accrington Stanley Community Trust, said: “We have been working with education providers outside of Accrington with regards historically, but we think it’s hugely important to work in collaboration with local organisations in #AmazingAccrington.

“This will very much be a combined effort and it’s a partnership that we are hoping will grow bigger and bigger. We are incredibly grateful to Accrington and Rossendale College for their support with this venture!”

Ste Buckley, who is heading up the partnership, added: “We are hoping this course will appeal to those who may be interested in a sports career but aren’t sure which route to take in order to achieve that.

“It’s going to be a wonderful working relationship that the college forge and maintain with Accrington Stanley and we are excited about the future prospects this will bring to our students.”

Charlotte Scheffmann, Assistant Principal at Accrington and Rossendale College, commented: “Accrington and Rossendale College prides itself on building community connections and creating ongoing relationships with other organisations in #AmazingAccrington.

“Stanley Trust is a voluntary organisation and we want to do what we can to support them. It’s a two-way working relationship which will benefit both the college and the trust.”
